Turn It Up: Play On Philly Takes the Spotlight in November

Our November event is going to be loud, joyful, and unforgettable. We’re proud to announce Play On Philly as our Charity Spotlight. They’re bringing their students, their instruments, and their energy to the Kimmel on Thursday, November 19th.

This isn’t an evening you just sit and watch. You’ll hear it, feel it and get your hands on it.

Meet Play On Philly

Since 2011, Play On Philly has given Philadelphia kids something many of them would never otherwise have: serious, daily music training at no cost. It was founded by Curtis Institute of Music graduate Stanford Thompson and philanthropist Carole Haas Gravagno.

Inspired by Venezuela’s famous El Sistema model, students train before and after school and perform more than 25 times a year. The program builds more than musicians. It builds discipline, teamwork, confidence and focus that carry into the classroom and beyond.

Step Into the Instrument Petting Zoo

Yes, you read that right. Play On Philly is bringing its Instrument Petting Zoo, an open, hands-on experience to step away from the week and simply play.

The petting zoo is how Play On Philly students first meet their instruments at the start of each school year. On November 19th, you’ll get the same introduction.

Step up to one of two marimbas, the xylophone or the vibraphone, and play a few notes with whoever’s beside you. Grab something from the hand percussion table and add to the beat. Before long, we have a band, and the person next to you is no longer a stranger.

Play On Philly students will be there to show you around, and they make good teachers. With Mark closing the evening on drums, everything comes back to rhythm.

A Finale You Won’t Want to Miss

To close his talk, Mark will take the stage with Play On Philly students for a special live performance.

Why It Matters

Every child deserves access to music. Play On Philly makes that happen for students across our city, every single day. When you join us in November, you’re not just attending an event. You’re helping shine a light on one of Philadelphia’s most inspiring organizations.

Bring Someone With You

This is the event to share. Bring a colleague, a client or a friend who would love an evening of music, inspiration and great company.
